Crochet Mandala Wall Art

In spite of all the craziness, we've successfully made our move cross-country! And we are excited to be here in Arizona (even if it's basically like living in an oven right now). But it turns out that moving from a tiny student housing apartment with cinderblock walls into an actual house means that we suddenly have waaay more wall space to fill. That, combined with moving being really expensive, means that it's the perfect time for some DIY wall art. So I pulled out my hooks and created this crocheted mandala wall hanging! Oh, crochet, is there anything you can't do?
Mandala Wall Free Crochet Pattern
I had a vision in my head of something crocheted around hoops of various sizes, so mandalas seemed like the obvious choice. And, since I can never make anything simple for myself, I decided to design all the mandalas myself! I've never designed any mandalas before, so this was a fun new creative challenge. I don't really have any experience making mandalas either (the only one I can ever remember making is the center of the Sophie's Universe blanket), so I have no clue how these compare to a standard mandala pattern. So we'll just call them Cookie-Snob-esque mandalas. But either way, I love how they turned out!

To make this wall hanging, I basically just crocheted around wooden embroidery hoops (I found a great price on them at Michaels, but I'm sure you can get them at just about any craft store). I got 9 different sized hoops, ranging from 3" to 14" and then I separated each hoop into its two rings so that I could design 2 mandalas from each one. So to help keep everything straight, I've named the different mandalas for the size hoop I crocheted it around. So when it says, "6" Inner," that means it's the inner ring from the 6" embroidery hoop. Or if it says, "12" Outer," that means it's the outer ring from the 12" embroidery hoop, and so on. If you want to make your own wall hanging, you can get all of the same size hoops I used (listed in the materials section) or you can just pick and choose your favorites and customize it to your tastes. I'll also list the approximate yardage needed for each individual hoop so you can calculate how much you'll need if you aren't making them all.

Then once you have your hoops, you'll arrange them, connect them (or leave them as individual hoops—totally up to you), and then find a spot to hang them! Or, if you want to fill even more wall space, you can do what I did and add a long fringe to the bottom for more of a modern-boho-type look. One of my favorite parts of this design is that there are so many ways to customize it and make it fit your space and your style. I'm secretly hoping that other people end up making some of these and send me pictures, because I would LOVE to see some variations. I also think this would look amazing with some fairy lights (just sayin').

Before we move on to the patterns and assembly details, I have one last really important note about gauge (everyone's least favorite topic, but bear with me): I designed these mandalas to fit specific hoop sizes, so if your gauge differs from mine, you'll probably find that the sizes don't match up and that they don't fit the hoops correctly. So please check your gauge on this one! Also, when you get to the joining step for each mandala, it should be smaller than the size of the hoop; the pattern needs to stretch slightly so that the stitches look taut and don't sag in the hoop. If your mandala is the same size as or larger than the hoop, that's a huge red flag that the gauge is off. Here's a picture of one of the mandalas right before it's attached to the hoop to give you an idea of what it should look like. Okay, enough talking! Let's go!

Whew! You made it! That is a lot of hoops. But now we get to have fun arranging them! Lay out your hoops and decide how you want to arrange them to fit your wall space.
Mandala Wall Free Crochet Pattern
Once you're happy with your arrangement, you can attach them together so that you don't have to hang each hoop individually. I recommend flipping the hoops over and threading a short piece of the same yarn through the last row of the two hoops you're connecting. Tie off with a square knot, then weave the tails in. The wall art shouldn't be getting moved around a ton so you don't need to go crazy weaving in the tails; we just want to hide them.

And now to add the fringe! I decided to add fringe just along the bottom edge in every other stitch. I started by cutting 48" lengths of yarn. I also used a few longer lengths (about 54") for the left edge, since my design had a bigger gap there. Feel free to play around with lengths depending on your design.  Then I attached them like so:

Insert your hook into the stitch where you want the fringe, from back to front. Fold the 48" piece of yarn in half and grab the center with your hook.

Pull the center through the stitch until you have a good sized loop.

Using either your fingers or your hook, pull the tail of the 48" piece of yarn through the loop you just made.

And then pull taut to finish it off! Ta-dah!

Continue to add fringe until you're happy with the way it looks. Then you can trim the ends to even them out. And you're done!

Now you can just hang your wall art with a few strategic nails or hooks. Step back and admire your work! Or, if you're me, trim the ends of the fringe again and THEN admire your work.

I hope that you enjoyed this DIY mandala wall art! I love how mine turned out. It's perfect for my space and, since it's right above my computer, I get to admire it whenever I'm working on this blog! I would love to see it. Happy hooking!

OMG so beautiful! We just moved to Germany from loving in a fifth wheel for 4 years so I understand having extra wall space. I can't wait to get started on this! Thank you!

I am close to finishing all the hoops for this wonderful piece of art and wondered if you had any tips/tricks for attaching your pieces together. I have been sweating that part so hard. Did you tie or crochet? Did you work through stitches and if so how many? Or did you actually tie the hoops together between stitches? I also wondered what you used to hang it and about how many of the hoops are actually attached to the wall. I am making this for my daughter's new house and she wants the layout to look exactly like yours. (Fine with me because I can see myself really sweating the layout, also). We are so excited to see this finished and on her wall!

Hi Loretta!

If you look at the end of this blog post, you'll find a description of how I attached the pieces, along with a picture of what it looked like while I was attaching them. But the basic concept is that I flipped them over to the back side, cut a small piece of yarn, and just tied all of the hoops that touch each other together (one knot for each connection to another hoop). I used square knots for mine and then just tucked the extra ends of yarn through the last row of the mandala to hide the ends. Hopefully that makes sense. But let me know if that's confusing in any way.

As for hanging the finished piece, I hung mine with just 5 nails. I placed 4 at the very top (one each for the 2 on the top left and one each for the 2 on the top right). The 5th nail is anchoring the bottom right hoop. It's surprisingly lightweight for its size, so it doesn't take much. But you can definitely use more nails to secure it if it makes you feel better :) I think I might add one more nail to support the left-most large hoop, now that I'm staring at it haha. But there's not really any wrong way to do it.

I can't wait to hear how yours turns out! I bet it'll be beautiful! Good luck! :)

Thank you so much. I was hoping you just tied the hoops together. I will work on this later in the week. My daughter is two hours away and I don’t know when I’ll be back to visit her but this helps a lot. I definitely will be posting pics and tagging you when I get this hung. Thanks again for your help!

Can you use the metal hoops instead of the wooden ones?

I LOVE this and I've been working on it. I want it to be just like yours because it is going to be perfect for my wall. It's an all wood wall made of cypress. I can't wait and I'm almost done. I also want to make on that I saw either on ravelry or popped up while looking at yours. It's blue, cream and white kind of like a denim blue. My mom wants it- it's a bit smaller, about 5-7 hoops, but I lost the website 8(
Everyone is loving it and I will try to post pics when I'm done. Still waiting on a 6" hoop, they were out. I've only got that one and the 14 " one left to do.

This is beautiful. My sister has a few dream catchers on her walls that she bought and I told her I’d make her a couple. Now I need to scope out her walls and see if I can fit this in a space. Love this.

Hi, Thanks for the lovely pattern! I’m having fun working my way through the hoops so far and the variety of patterns. I’m having a little trouble with 7” inner. Is it possible that there’s an error in rounds 2 and 3? I’m having trouble getting it to lie flat and match up with the stitch count for the following rounds.

I took another stab at it this morning and this seemed to work for me:

Round 2: ch 2, [bo, ch 4, skip next st] 6 times, ss to join (6 sts, 6 ch-4 spaces)
Round 3: ch 1, [sc in the next st, sc 4 times in the ch-4 space] 6 times, ss to join (30)

So I just changed from chain 2 to chain 4 in round 2. And sc 4 in the chain space instead of 3 in round 3 which gave me the 30 stitches I needed to line up with round 4.

Hello

Thank you for being so detailed.

Can you share what you did to the outer hoop to get the circle? - How did your remove the metal clasp and how did you glue/tape the hoop together so it wouldn’t come apart?

Thank you

Hi Nikki,

With the outer hoop, I actually left the metal clasp and just tightened it as far as it would go. When I crocheted the final round to join, I just crocheted around it. Keeping the clasp tightened and the tension from the stitches has been enough to keep the circles closed. I still have them up on my wall and haven't had any issues with them yet. Hopefully that helps! Let me know if you have other questions :)

Has anyone made this in a darker color? I’m
Wondering if it will look good or if I should stick with white?
Thanks

I’m currently alternating colors for this project to match a wedding and I’m using burgundy and rose pink. So far it’s looking really really pretty. I think it would look great in any color to match your other decor

Hi! I’m having some issues with the 7” outer mandala in row 4. I’m confused on how to fpdtr2tog and which posts to start with. Is there a tutorial video I could watch or could you offer a little more explanation?
