Mitzy Mouse Plushy

When my daughter requested that I crochet her a mouse, I couldn't wait to get started! I had a great time designing this cuddly little mouse and my kids have all tested it out (the baby even gives it her chomp of approval), so it's sure to be a winner. I hope that you love Mitzy Mouse as much as we do and that you enjoy this new crochet pattern!

This design has some very specific shaping requirements to make the more complex shapes (we're not just working with simple circles and ovals here), so be sure to pay close attention to the pattern. Luckily, it's not a difficult design, just precise. The only tricky-ish part is making the legs, but I've added some step-by-step photos to help you out if you get stuck. As always, feel free to get in touch if you still have questions about any part of the pattern.

Also, if you prefer, you can make the mouse's body in all one solid color or personalize the color choices any way you'd like. If you want to make the arms and legs all one color, just skip the color changes and use the same color throughout. Just note that you'll need more yards of yarn in the body color to compensate if you only use one color.

Stitch Glossary:
st(s) = stitch(es)
ch = chain
ss = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
inc = sc increase (work 2 sc into the same st)
dec = sc decrease (I prefer to use an invisible decrease st)
PM = place stitch marker
BLO = back loop only

Materials:
  • 70 yds (40 g) of I Love This Cotton! Yarn in Dove
  • 20 yds (12 g) of I Love This Cotton! Yarn in Rosy
  • A little bit of black scrap yarn
  • Size F (3.75 mm) crochet hook
  • 2 (6.0 mm) safety eyes
  • Fiberfill stuffing
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch markers

Gauge:
2” = 10 sc sts, 2” = 10 rows
Finished mouse is about 6” tall, excluding the ears (since placement can vary)
Gauge isn't crucial for this project as long as your stitches are tight enough to keep in the stuffing when making the head and arms. I tend to crochet tightly, so if you're a looser crocheter, I recommend sizing down a hook.

Note: Unless otherwise specified, this pattern is worked in continuous rounds without joining (only the ears are joined). I recommend using a stitch marker and moving it after each round to help you keep your place.

Head:
Using the Dove yarn:

Round 9: [sc in the next 3 sts, inc] 3 times, sc in the next 6 sts (21)
Round 10: [sc in the next 2 sts, inc, sc in the next 2 sts] 3 times, sc in the next 6 sts (24)

Round 17: [sc in the next 2 sts, dec, sc in the next 2 sts] 6 times (30)
Round 18: sc around (30)
Pause crocheting and add the face. Use the stitch markers you placed to help you center the face. Place the safety eyes between rounds 9 and 10, about 8 stitches apart. Using the black scrap yarn, stitch the eyebrows between rounds 11 and 12 and stitch the mouth between rounds 8 and 9. Using a piece of the Rosy yarn, stitch the nose back and forth 4 or more times (to get the look you want) across round 1. Begin stuffing and continue to stuff as you go. Once you finish the face, you can remove the stitch markers.

Assembly:
Using the tapestry needles and the long yarn tails, sew the ears to the head between rounds 15 and 16, about 8 sts apart. Sew the head to the top of the body, using the stitch markers to help you center it. Make sure the protruding bottom end of the body is the back side. Sew the arms on both sides of the body. Sew the legs onto both sides of the body, gently stuffing the grey part of the leg as you sew. Sew the tail onto the back of the body. Weave in remaining ends.
