January has flown by and with Valentine's day approaching, now seems like the perfect time to share this crochet pattern that I've been sitting on for the last while. Meet the Huggable Heart Plushy! This heart is the perfect size for hugs and can be customized with whatever color or face design you'd like. Or you can leave off the face entirely; it'll still look great. My kids love this one and I hope you will too! My original design for this heart had two little arms for giving hugs, but when I asked about whether it was better with or without the arms, the response on my instagram poll was overwhelmingly against the arms. So I present to you the pattern sans-arms. If you find yourself making this pattern and wishing for some arms (or some legs), I have a note at the end of the pattern that will walk you through a basic limb you can add. Either way, you'll need to start with the heart base, so let's check it out! If you'd like an ad-free printable PDF version, you can find one on Ravelry. Stitch Glossary: st(s) = stitch(es) sc = single crochet inc = sc increase (work 2 sc in the same st) dec = sc decrease (work 2 sc together) Materials:
2" = 10 sc sts, 2"= 12 rows of sc This creates a heart about 9" tall and 9" wide Note: This pattern is worked in continuous rounds without joining or turning. I recommend using a stitch marker and moving it after each round to help you keep your place. Round 1: make a magic circle and work 6 sc into the circle, pull taut to close (6) Round 2: inc 6 times (12) Round 3: [inc, sc] 6 times (18) Round 4: [sc, inc, sc] 6 times (24) Round 5: [inc, sc in the next 3 sts] 6 times (30) Round 6: [sc in the next 2 sts, inc, sc in the next 2 sts] 6 times (36) Round 7: sc around (36) Round 8: [inc, sc in the next 5 sts] 6 times (42) Round 9: sc around (42) Round 10: [sc in the next 3 sts, inc, sc in the next 3 sts] 6 times (48) Round 11: sc around (48) Round 12: [inc, sc in the next 7 sts] 6 times (54) Rounds 13-14: sc around (54) Round 15: [sc in the next 4 sts, inc, sc in the next 4 sts] 6 times (60) Rounds 16-17: sc around (60) Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail for sewing. Repeat Rounds 1-17, but this time do NOT fasten off Round 18: sc in the next 50 sts, skip the next 10 sts, then pick up the first piece you made and sc in the next 50 sts, skip the next 10 sts (100) This will attach both sides of the heart together at one point, as shown. As you begin the next round, be sure NOT to work into the stitches you skipped in Round 18. As you keep crocheting, it should connect the two pieces together at a second point, with a small hole in between the two pieces. Don't worry about the hole; we'll close it off in a bit. Rounds 19-22: sc around (100) Round 23: [dec, sc in the next 23 sts] 4 times (96( Round 24: sc around (96) Round 25: [sc in the next 7 sts, dec, sc in the next 7 sts] 6 times (90) Rounds 26-27: sc around (90) Round 28: [dec, sc in the next 13 sts] 6 times (84) Round 29: sc around (84) Round 30: [sc in the next 6 sts, dec, sc in the next 6 sts] 6 times (78) Round 31: sc around (78) Round 32: [dec, sc in the next 11 sts] 6 times (72) Round 33: sc around (72) Round 34: [sc in the next 5 sts, dec, sc in the next 5 sts] 6 times (66) Round 35: sc around (66) Round 36: [dec, sc in the next 9 sts] 6 times (60) Round 37: sc around (60) Round 38: [sc in the next 4 sts, dec, sc in the next 4 sts] 6 times (54) Round 39: sc around (54) Round 40: [dec, sc in the next 7 sts] 6 times (48) Round 41: sc around (48) Round 42: [sc in the next 3 sts, dec, sc in the next 3 sts] 6 times (42) Round 43: sc around (42) Pause crocheting and use a stitch marker to hold the active stitch. Using the leftover yarn tail and a tapestry needle, sew the hole between the two sides of the heart shut. I like the use the mattress stitch to sew it, but you can use whichever stitch you prefer. Add the face. Attach safety eyes between Rounds 28 and 29, about 10 sts apart (or wherever your preferred placement is). Using a little bit of black yarn and a tapestry needle, stitch on eyebrows and a smile. I placed my smile between Rounds 34 and 36 and the eyebrows across Round 26. Begin stuffing and continue to stuff as you go. Resume crocheting. Round 44: [dec, sc in the next 5 sts] 6 times (36) Round 45: sc around (36) Round 46: [sc in the next 2 sts, dec, sc in the next 2 sts] (30) Round 47: sc around (30) Round 48: [dec, sc in the next 3 sts] 6 times (24) Round 49: sc around (24) Round 50: [sc, dec, sc] 6 times (18) Round 51: sc around (18) Round 52: [dec, sc] 6 times (12) Round 53: dec 6 times (6) Finish stuffing. Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Using a tapestry needle, thread the yarn tail through the front loops of the last round and pull taut to close. Fasten off and weave in any remaining ends. And, as promised, here are some quick instructions for anyone who wants to add any arms or legs to the heart: Optional Arm/Leg: Round 1: make a magic circle and work 6 sc into the circle, pull taut to close (6) Round 2: inc 6 times (12) Round 3: sc around (12) Repeat Round 3 until the arm or leg is the length you want. Fasten off, leaving a yarn tail for sewing. Then lightly stuff the limb and sew it in place using the yarn tail and a tapestry needle. Repeat as many times as needed. There you have it!
